Disappointment, Success for Andretti Green Racing/Team 7-Eleven at Indy 500

Team 7-Eleven driver Tony Kanaan had a round of bad luck over Memorial Day weekend at the Indianapolis 500. The Andretti Green Racing (AGR) team member and driver of IndyCar No. 11 was knocked out of the race after crashing on lap 97.

Kanaan had led at least one lap in each of his previous seven Indy 500 starts, a streak that came to an end Sunday, May 24. Kanaan was running in the top five throughout the race when he said something broke in the middle of a straightaway, causing him to crash. The single-car incident caused Kanaan's car to make head-on impact with the Turn 3 wall. His injuries minor, Kanaan said he is happy he walked away from the "nasty, nasty" crash. He placed 27th.
AGR team driver Danica Patrick finished in third place, her best finish in five "500" starts and the highest for a female driver in Indy 500 history. Finishing in 10th place, AGR team second-year driver Hideki Mutoh now has two top-10 finishes in his two-career Indianapolis 500 starts. Driver Marco Andretti endured disappointment as another driver's car brushed against his wheels causing damage in lap 1. Andetti's crew made repairs and he completed 56 laps to finish 30th.
Despite driving setbacks from Kanaan and Andretti, the success of Patrick and Mutoh give AGR something to celebrate - since the team's 2003 inaugural season, AGR has now placed at least one car in the top three of every Indianapolis 500 in which it has competed.
Kanaan and his fellow AGR team drivers resume racing this Sunday, May 31, at the Milwaukee Mile in West Allis, Wis.
